A Guide to Duty of Care Responsibilities for School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in NSW Government Schools

School based apprenticeships and traineeships operate over an extended period of time (normally 2 years).
Each requires preparation before commencement and ongoing monitoring and management.
The Duty of Care process includes information and documentation for each stage of the school based apprenticeship and traineeship.

School principals and the NSW Department of Education & Training staff have specific duty of care responsibilities for their students.
These responsibilities include:

  • minimising potential risk to students in SBATs in relation to child protection, workplace safety and supervision in the workplace
  • monitoring the progress, safety and welfare of students in SBATs
  • using the notifications process to ensure follow-up of incidents concerning school based apprentices or trainees
